Role and Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Unit Coordinator, in conjunction with the Medical Director, the primary responsibility of the SUD Healthcare Specialist is to assist recovery treatment staff in identifying client immediate health care needs that will impede on the recovery process. Educate and review client medications and continue to support the treatment team with appropriate medical, mental health, and dental referrals. This role involves assisting the client with managing medications that support SUD treatment (MAT), addressing client health concerns, and delivering incidental medical services (IMS) within a residential treatment setting. The specialist fosters a positive and health-focused environment that promotes long-term wellness and compassionate care for clients in recovery.

Clinical Care

Provide incidental Medical Services (IMS) to address medical issues related to treatment, recovery, or detoxification.
Take vital signs, review client medical history, and complete clients’ health history forms.
Monitor clients’ health status, resolve concerns promptly, and communicate findings with the treatment team.
Perform office-based testing and treatment under clinician supervision, including tests associated with detoxification and overseeing client self-administered medications and documentation.
Prepare IMS office for physician encounters, ensuring a safe and organized environment.
Dispense and monitor client medication as needed
Monitor and review medication logs to ensure compliance with county, state and federal guidelines, support team to properly collect and store urine samples.

Treatment Support & Care Coordination

Support improved treatment outcomes by facilitating client access to high-quality care and contributing to personalized treatment plans.
Maintain and conduct weekly progress reports to the treatment team or as needed.
Coordinate client medical care, including referrals, scheduling for appointments.
Provide support, education, and guidance to clients and their families to promote the best possible treatment outcomes.
Utilize evidence-based practices in all education and counseling interactions.
Maintain accurate documentation of care, testing, and treatment procedures.
Participate in program weekly case conferences as needed
Provide for maintenance of state and local health and safety codes, building security and residents welfare.
Upon supervisor request provide support for treatment team as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES)

1. REQUIREMENTS:

a. Relevant healthcare degree or certification (e.g. RN, LPN, CMA, or equivalent)

b. Experience in substance use treatment, behavioral health, or clinical care preferred.

c. Knowledge of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) protocols

d. Two (2)-years of college education related to field or two (2) -years equivalent work experience related to position.

e. Must have Valid Class C Driver’s license, California minimum Automobile Insurance and an appropriate motor vehicle.

f. Permanent resident or U.S. citizen; proof of work eligibility upon hiring.

g. Must have at least two (3) years of recovery or a drug free lifestyle as of the date of the application.

h. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in computer and internet operations.

i. Ability to work with people of diverse cultural, educational, social, and economic backgrounds

j. Skill and ability to communicate effectively and accurately over the telephone and in writing

k. Good command of basic English for written or oral communication

l. Complete physical examination and TB test upon hiring.

2. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

a. State approved Certified Medial Assistant (CMA) or equivalent training

b. Previous experience with SUD, MAT, HIV, treatment

c. Knowledge of 12 step and group facilitation skills

d. Strong Communication and interpersonal skills

e. Familiarity with tele-health platforms and electronic medical records

f. Ability to work with diverse populations

g. Ability to work with a diverse team and demonstrate flexibility

h. Ability to demonstrate compassionate and nonjudgmental approach to patient care

i. EXYM, Sage, and KPI access.

General Requirements and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s):

Permanent resident or U.S. Citizen; proof of work eligibility upon hiring.
Must have three (3) years of recovery or drug free lifestyle as of the date of the application.
Must provide proof of full vaccination and 1st Booster against Covid-19 upon hiring.
Ability to get along well with others, be punctual, pleasant, and tactful with professional appearance and conduct.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, clients and their families, community organizations, and the general public.
Ability to be culturally competent of age groups, gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic status, and diverse cultures.
Ability to train and manage a team of 2-3 Intake Counselors located a different site, and conduct weekly meetings
Coordinate work schedules amongst the team, and be able to cover for other Intakes when needed
Able to move/travel around other treatment sites as needed, and community-based.

Physical Requirements:

Light Duty

Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time, which includes repetitive data entry with computers. The position frequently communicates with customers and/or coworkers and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

This class is intended for positions requiring light physical effort, which may include occasional lifting to a 10-pound limit, and some bending, stooping, or squatting and occasionally ascends/descends ladders and staircase.
